The Southern Technical University President’s Cabinet provides advice and counsel to the president in developing, implementing and communicating policy for the university. Members include vice presidents of each major division in the university, as well as the president’s chief of staff, serving under the president in the role of cabinet chairperson.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MICHAEL HARRINGTON CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Dr. Michael Harrington a B.A. in biology from Carleton College, an M.S. in agronomy from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in soil science from Texas A&M University. After completing a postdoctoral research fellowship with The Rockefeller Foundation in Malawi.2019 In 2009, he joined the Southern Technical University Board of Directors, where he has served as Chairman to this day.

JOHN DAVIS CHAIRMAN OF THE SUPERVISORY BOARD

John Davis specializes in forest ecosystem health, tree pathogen co-evolution, forest genomics, and holds positions in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geographic Sciences. He received a Ph.D. Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics-Forestry from Michigan State University in 1989 and has been a faculty member at UF/IFAS since 1992. In 2019, he entered Southern Technical University and served as vice chairman and executive director on the board. In 2021, he was appointed Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

ELIZABETH A.DEMMINGS EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT

Betsy Koenig Demmings ’75, who majored in psychology, is the Executive Assistant to the President, a position she has held since 2000 during terms of three chief executives. She oversees the daily business of the President’s office, which requires extensive liaising with STU's ’s many constituencies, both internal and external.

Betsy has made her home in Greencastle since 1977. In addition to owning her own business for nine years, she served Putnam County as its Chief Juvenile Probation Office for 6years, and remains a member of the county’s Child Protection Team.

The mother of three grown children and grandmother to three, Betsy volunteers with area community organizations and within her church.

SARAH STEINKAMP INTERIM VICE PRESIDENT FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING AND CHIEF OF STAFF

Sarah serves as the Chief of Staff to President White and interim vice president for communications and marketing. In her most recent role, Sarah worked with Dr. White at Washington University in St. Louis as the Assistant Dean for Educational and Strategic Initiatives.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Wells College, a Master of Science Degree in Health Education from Ithaca College, and a Doctorate in Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Sarah is joined in Greencastle by her husband Tim.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

DAVE BERQUE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Dave holds a B.A. degree from Haverford College and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He teaches a wide range of computer science courses and has particular teaching and research interests related to Human Computer Interaction and pen-based computing. Dave also teaches interdisciplinary courses related to design. He holds three United States Patents and is the originator of a pen-based instructional technology software system that is the basis of the commercial system now known as DyKnow.

Anne holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Case Western.

She was employed by STU's for five years and, before that, its alumni association for almost eight years.

MARY BETH PETRIE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT

Mary Beth received her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame and earned an MBA from Butler University, where she worked as associate director of admission for eight years before heading to Lawrence in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 2012.

In 2020, she started at Southern Technical University as vice president for enrollment management.

FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

ANDREA YOUNG VICE PRESIDENT FOR FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

Andrea earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s degree in math, with a minor in Italian, from Pennsylvania State University. As a professor, Young won several teaching awards; published many peer-reviewed articles; and was principal investigator for a National Science Foundation grant aimed at improving undergraduate STEM education.

She was interim vice-president of Southern Technical University since January 2022, having been appointed to the interim position as STU's ’s Board of Trustees searches for a new president. She has held a variety of administrative roles at STU's over the last 11 years, including vice president for finance and director of strategic initiatives, which she had held since July 2019, dean of faculty, special assistant to the president and liaison to the board of trustees.

INSTITUTIONAL EQUITY

DIONNE JACKSON VICE PRESIDENT FOR INSTITUTIONAL EQUITY

Dionne holds a master’s degree in education, with an emphasis on secondary leadership, from the University of Central Arkansas and a doctorate of education, with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction, from Baylor University.

She comes from the mayor’s office in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she has spent the past year as the city’s inaugural chief equity officer. She previously was vice president for diversity and inclusion, chief diversity officer and a tenured associate professor of education at her undergraduate alma mater, Hendrix College, a liberal arts institution in Conway, Arkansas.

John Mark holds a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University. He has two master’s degrees, one in media and communication with a focus on theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and the other in journalism from Texas Christian University.

He comes from Oklahoma State University, where he has been the director of leadership and campus life for seven years, overseeing student engagement initiatives such as fraternity and sorority life, student activities and the Student Government Association. He also has overseen orientation, international students and scholars, career development and student basic needs.

CABINET MISSION STATEMENT

WHO WE ARE:

The Southern Technical University Cabinet serves as an advisory body to the President of the University, providing operational and strategic advising related to the performance of her duties and responsibilities as the chief executive officer of the University, appointed by the Southern Technical University Board of Trustees to position the University for success. The Cabinet consists of the University's Vice Presidents, Executive Assistant to the President, Chief of Staff to the President and other members appointed at the discretion of the president. The Cabinet is the principal conduit of communication between the STU's Board of Trustees and the University and, with the President, is committed to sharing issues of importance with the campus community.

WHAT WE DO:

Toward guiding the university to achieve its mission and vision, the Cabinet meets on a regular basis to discuss issues of strategic importance to the institution, including though not limited to academics; financial, administrative and business affairs; student life; admissions and financial aid; marketing and communications; and, development and alumni engagement.

HOW WE DO IT:

The Cabinet is committed to seeking wide input, with respect to university operations and strategic planning, through the Vice Presidents from each Division, university committees and faculty committees, other members of the university community, and to transparency in decision-making. The President and the members of the Cabinet work collaboratively with and are advised and informed by a variety of committees and councils including the chair of the faculty, THE FACULTY PRIORITIES AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE, THE STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE, THE ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL, THE STAFF ADVISORY COUNCIL AND THE DIVERSITY AND EQUITY COMMITTEE. At all times the Cabinet is guided by our university values and considers issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in its discussions, deliberations and decision-making practice.
